These objects, most often stainless steel kitchen utensils, allude to Indian culture...A worthy heir to the Duchampian legacy, Subodh Gupta collects everyday objects to make monumental installations and sculptures. These objects, most often stainless steel kitchen utensils, allude to Indian culture and the social and political realities of the country. In his piece A Giant Leap of Faith, Gupta piled up 13 buckets to form a monumental column. The bucket, a symbol of the daily labour of millions of people, here takes on a spiritual dimension, much like the strange concrete monuments scattered through the Indian countryside.
