Born in Shanghai in 1977, Xu Zhen is one of the rising stars of the young Chinese generation. His provocative aesthetics relies on both conceptual and pop strategies: he has transformed himself into a brand with the creation in 2009 of his art corporation Made In Company. Sullied with dried dirt and imprinted with marks of hands and feet, 12’91’’ seems a provocative symbol of rebellion and oppression and caused a strong emotional reaction when it appeared as part of "China Power Station Part I" at the Serpentine Gallery (London) in 2008.
