Partitions Régulières by Raphaël Zarka (b. 1977, Montpellier) are modular sculptures based on models designed by mathematician and crystallographer Arthur Schoenflies (1853-1928). Appropriating these forms for sculptural purposes, the artist modifies their scale and transposes them into other materials. These works reflect two different approaches to Schoenflies’ models, which the artist sums up in the following way: “The first approach is to emphasize the sin- gular forms of the most sculptural blocks, which is what I did with La Famille Schoenflies, a series of seven small sculptures in cherry wood placed on the floor (2016). The second focuses on the combi- natorial possibilities of modules, something I’ve been experimenting with since 2015 through different configurations of its module N°5 in the form of ’instrumental sculptures’ intended for skateboard use.”
