Born in 1927 in Havana, Agustín Cárdenas studied at the Fine Arts School of his native city, where he was introduced to modeling and then to direct carving, which became his favorite techniques. He later freed himself from the classical education he had received to inaugu- rate a new sculptural language, more modern and abstract, of which La Grande Porte is a representation. Cárdenas combines American, European and African influences in a sculpture with simplified, stretched and rounded volumes. A formal abstraction counterbalanced by the choice of the title, suggesting a figurative representation.
